Dolomite rock is a sedimentary rock that can be found worldwide. One of the largest exposures of dolomite rock on earth is a mountain range in the northern Italian Alps, called “The Dolomites”. It has 18 peaks which rise to above 3,000 meters and cover 141,903 hectares. Widely regarded as being among the most attractive mountain landscapes in the world, this mountain range was included on the list of the UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2009.
When subjected to metamorphism (rise of heat and pressure), the Dolomite recrystallizes becoming a metamorphic rock known as “Dolomitic Marble”. The pale color ranges from white-to-gray and white-to-light brown although, other colors such as red, green, and black are possible.
Our exclusive Dolce Vita is a great example of dolomitic marble.
